Safety Culture and Leadership
We know that great safety culture is about more than just leadership.
It’s about a deeper understanding of the relationship between people, systems and processes that create a workplace where your people stay safe every day.
Safety does not come before or after your business and it certainly isn’t another thing on the “to do” list. It is an integral tool to drive your business performance, but many businesses fall short because they do not appreciate the interconnections of the 6 Principles of Safety (SPS™).
We will help you describe your culture, understand your strengths, identify your opportunities and then develop practical and meaningful actions to transform your safety culture.
We love surprising our clients with our simple and effective strategies, producing strong results. But mostly, we love powering organizations to new levels of performance through effective safety leadership.
Then we’ll create a vision together. We’ll map your potential, the pathway to getting there and the values that will carry you down that path. Find out more about our framework.

Risk Analysis
PretoriaSafety specialises in the quantification and analysis of business risk. One of the significant areas of risk that businesses must deal with is safety. Accordingly, PretoriaSafety has developed 6 Principles of Safety (SPS™) technology to assist our clients to not only understand where their key safety challenges lie, but to help them visualize how these challenges interrelate with cultural and tactical principles of safety. We do not see safety as an aftermarket product to enhance your business, at PretoriaSafety we see it as a primary business lever that can be pulled to improve all key performance metrics of a business.
At the heart of our safety processes beats a model of safety, that creates an integrated and interrelated visual representation of the complex interaction of six key principles that are independent yet must beat as one for an organisation to be truly safe. We wanted an ability to communicate the interrelatedness of safety with our clients and not just a wordy report and so SPS™ was created.
Our modules that form the Safety Culture & Leadership framework are designed to be delivered as a complete system for your organisation or you can select what is the right fit for you.
Organisational Safety Profiling
PretoriaSafety has created a unique process that enables us to map the overall safety profile of your business as a function of the six key principles. This analysis provides vital data and insight that we use to diagnose the strengths and opportunities of your current culture/climate and helps us to define a path that will lead you to a safer operating culture. Organisational Safety Profiling is a mix of anonymous group survey, verbatim feedback and interactive workshops. At the end of the process, we will know what your people think about your safety culture and why they think it. This is priceless information for building a strategy to assist businesses to move from their current level of safety performance to their preferred level.
On-Time Running Factor / Business Drivers
Armed with the information from the Organisational Safety Profiling exercise and working with teams within your organisation, PretoriaSafety will help you to define and articulate the On-Time Running Factor which is also described as the business drivers for your organisation. The On-Time Running Factor may never before been articulated and tends to develop over time to drive employee behaviour which may be counter-intuitive to the wishes of senior management. It is intimately linked to the culture and often sits below the waterline of organizational drivers.
We advocate businesses use this factor and use it rather than ignoring it to help drive improvements in safety performance.
Relationship Based Safety
Quality relationships are critical in building successful organisations. Leaders need to know how to engage with employees through a meaningful conversation about issues that are important to them. The trigger for establishing the conversation is a mutual understanding between employees and leaders about your On-Time Running Factor.
The Engagement process utilises our SPS™ framework of safety, Take 5 or JSA development to initiate and support effective communication between the manager/supervisor and employee. Effective communication with an emphasis on ‘active listening’ will build trust, credibility and respect within the organisation. This process coupled with effective hazard controls will yield a powerful engagement and outcome-focused organisation.
One of the great failings of leaders/managers is the ability to communicate effectively with their staff. Knowing what to discuss about safety and how to discuss it is tough for many supervisors/managers. PretoriaSafety have combined the basic risk management tool of a ‘Take 5’ and incorporated it within a process of effective communication that is designed to promote respect and trust between supervisor/manager with the aim to foster better relationships.
A Tactical Framework

PretoriaSafety’s approach
PretoriaSafety’s approach enables the communication between a Manager and their Employee about relevant and meaningful safety issues that are important to both. Effective Managers understand their Employee’s interests and ideas in the workplace and this knowledge provides the Manager with a significant opportunity to engage with employee’s and be involved in a meaningful discussion about safety.
This discussion is not about generalities and safety platitudes, it is about how employees understand production and service delivery objectives through a common understanding and framework of safety.
Acknowledgement and action in relation to Employee concerns and ideas about understanding and improving safety in the workplace provide an opportunity for the Manager to develop a relationship by demonstrating:
Active listening: a genuine interest in understanding safety issues & concerns.
That safety is important to them: a clear commitment to promoting safety in the organisation.
Leadership: demonstrating personal accountability for safety performance.
Credibility: ‘Walking the talk’, actioning issues.
Respect: recognising that others also have valuable ideas to contribute.
Trust in the opinion of others
