Critical Risk Management

Critical Risk Management

We want to help you focus on your business goals and objectives by using a safety lens to identify your ‘critical few’ hazards and ensure that your controls and processes are effective. This is important as the critical risks are the ones that will stop your business.

To prevent fatal or other catastrophic events occurring – the major hazards of a business must be understood, the necessary critical controls must be clearly defined and implemented and there must be clarity as to who is accountable for effective implementation and monitoring. A critical control management approach is an effective way of achieving this, by applying a risk management effort on those controls that are most critical for the health and safety of your people.

The OTR factor (OTRF)

The OTR factor (the OTRF) defines the primary business drivers or purpose of the organisation that most employees would relate to, understand and likely have metrics or KPI’s linked to it. Typically, the OTRF’s are those outcomes of the business that are measured e.g. timely arrival/departure schedules of airlines, sales of the product for retail businesses or production of goods etc. for a manufacturer.

We can determine the ‘On Time Running’ factor (OTR) that drives employee behaviour in your business and identify your Critical Unwanted Events (CUE’s) and review the systems that you have in place to manage your risks. We can also test your control effectiveness and seek out the gaps.

We can help you develop a system focused on the critical few risks and that is risk-based, that controls material hazards and engages people in achieving your ‘On-Time Running’ factor safely.

PretoriaSafety will achieve this by applying our seven (7) key stages and these are:

[

Identify your Major Hazards that could give rise to a Critical Unplanned Event (CUE)

[

Complete a bowtie risk assessment of each CUE and explore the current controls whilst considering additional controls

[

Determine what actions are required to make these controls effective

[

Develop a meaningful process that will verify that the controls are effective

[

Determine who will be accountable for ensuring that the process is functioning as expected and the controls are effective

[

Develop a process that verifies that stages 4 & 5 are working as expected

[

Develop an action/consequence plan for those who have or have not met their critical control accountabilities and link this with your performance management processes

Based on the results of this analysis and assessment, we will work with you to develop a prioritised implementation plan and establish a process that fits your existing Health and Safety system and then links with your Human Resources systems. We will help you focus, control and manage your ‘critical few’.

If you want to understand how effective your current critical risk controls currently are, contact us for a discussion that will help put you back in control of your risks, help boost productivity and profitability and all whilst improving safety.
